In June 2016, fourteen members of YCTC were welcomed to RAF Fylingdales on the North York Moors. Flight Lieutenant Richie Weeks delivered a briefing on the role of the Watching Station followed by a tour of the Solid State Phased Array Radar (SSPAR). During the briefing, we handled a model of one of the SSPAR antennae, whilst FL Weeks responded to our wide-ranging questions about the capabilities of the Radar equipment and about the facilities and life on the Station.

No personal electrical or photographic equipment was permitted inside the SSPAR, so the only photograph taken by us on the day records the fortunate few from YCTC who responded in time to the rare opportunity to tour the Station. Spare a thought for the RAF and civilian staff whose shifts involve gazing at screens 24/7 watching for celestial activity, man-made or astronomical, and for anything untoward such as the occasional drone flown too close to the Station by an inquisitive member of the public. We thank FL Weeks and his colleagues for granting us access to this site with which we were all familiar but knew little about.
